About

The Montreal Guitar Society was founded in 1995 in order to help foster interest in the classical guitar in the Montreal area. It was, and still is, our wish to organise a high-quality concert series, but also, and most importantly, to promote the classical guitar among young people. To this end the SGM (Société de guitare de Montréal), organizes  several  pedagodical  activities. They include a youth guitar competition, the Quebec guitar school orchestra festival, and master classes.

The SGM also includes  its own guitar orchestra made up entirely  of amateur guitarists of all ages. We have also made it our mission to form partnerships with other existing organisations in the Montréal area dedicated to the promotion of the arts, and music in particular. They include Montréal cultural centers, the Arte Musica Foundation of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Guitare Montréal International Festival, high schools, and  the Université du Québec à Montréal, where various ongoing pedagogical research  projects are conducted involving our guitar orchestra.  We also sponsor an informal  open-mic series in which all are welcome to come and perform.  Over the years , the SGM has built up a a substantial membership, and has collaborated with other Canadian guitar societies  in order to bring some of the most important internationally recognized  artists to Montreal for concerts. We are proud of the role we play in helping to insure the future of the classical guitar, and we hope that through our different activities, people of all ages and backgrounds will be able to enjoy the beauty of this instrument.
